Truth! Fuck the ‘it gets better’ campaign!

Filing this under “things that may hurt for me to say but needs to be said.” it hit me when I was at a transgender day of remembrance event and hearing all the names of women in countries of color being read. (Brazil and Latino America in particular.) Queer people of color have the duel battle within their families and communities and then add that to having to be seen as valid as a poc. Shit is rough. Queer folks are devalued twice as hard. When you already don’t see someone has a human being and then dehumanized even more. It’s a lot easier to perpetuate acts of violence when there’s more than one reason to see them as invalid. It Gets Better fails to address the needs of anyone who isn’t young, white, and a cis male.

While Swankivy wrote this in response to a specific person’s situation, I feel it’s got broad applicability, so I’m reposting it so that everyone can see it. Given the frequency with which aces run into problems with therapists, psychiatrists and other medical personnel, I’ll be reblogging this weekly so it stays available to anyone who needs it. It’s also linked from my sidebar.
Also, check out the Ace-Friendly Psychs wiki. It only has one publicly-visible entry so far but maybe that will change soon.
The child I babysit sometimes is 5 years old. Last time I went to take care of him I noticed he has this awesome painting of the moon in his bedroom. He told me his mothers friend painted it. After he told me the artists name he then explained to me “She used to be a boy but she didn’t feel good so now she just takes medicine and it helps her to be a girl. She feels better”
It’s literally that easy to explain it to kids.

These scientific authorities demonstrate with exhaustive research and great analytic detail that there are no meaningful differences between male and female brains, making implausible all arguments about transgenderism that depend on a connection between one’s brain and their sex.
REBLOG IT. YELL IT.
Fuck gender. Fuck stereotypes. Fuck naturalizing sex stereotypes as consensually chosen “gender identities” that are MAGICALLY divorced from the socio-historic context of female oppression. Fuck all that.
BRAIN SEX DOES NOT EXIST. Science agrees. :) GENDER IS A CONSTRUCT.
There are a few things I reblog on my main account due to the importance of the message, this is one of them.

http://leakshow.tumblr.com/ is exploiting trans women by hacking their computers and stealing pictures of them and posting them online. “Hacking has never been so funny. I’ve developed an advanced grabbing system for a famous cam website. Here’s the result. Have fun. “

We have until March 5 to get the required signatures to send this to the President for her pardon. The last petition came up short, but we can make it this time!

Elizabeth Emens, Compulsory Sexuality (2013)
*On pages 53-55 of the paper, Emens discusses four possible grounds for discrimination claims:
1) Animus-based discrimination (e.g., based on the idea that asexuality is “weird” or “abnormal”)
2) Being fired or harassed for IDing as asexual or behaving asexually
3) Becoming subject to stereotypes about asexuality that may bias against hiring or promotion
4) Disparate impact of policies that favor married couples

OH PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN. I’M SO HAPPY.
A new sex eduction bill introduced in the US on Thursday would provide five year grants to programs rejecting gender stereotypes and embracing LGBT students.
The Real Education for Healthy Youth Act, which was sponsored by Representative Barbara Lee of California, Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, and 32 other Democrats, encourages a “comprehensive” approach to sex education in schools and universities.
The bill would require programs to emphasise emotional skills and the development of “healthy attitudes and values”, around a variety of issues such as body image, gender identity and sexual orientation.
Strict standards would be set by it to prevent the promotion of gender stereotypes, and deliberate withholding of information about HIV, reports the Hill.
Everyone please support this bill. This would make my job so much easier.

This is a really good article that covers a lot of ground. From the student newspaper at the University of Pittsburgh.
Yay, visibility!
